A young woman in the UK woke up one morning with blood seeping out of her eye, and doctors still can’t explain why.
Marnie-Rae Harvey regularly suffers from blood mysteriously pouring out from her eye, ears, scalp, and beneath her tongue, but nobody knows what’s going on.
While medical professionals search for answers, they have dubbed 17-year-old Marnie-Rae their “Mystery Girl.”
"It's absolutely devastating. It happens every single day. We've just gone through 12 days of solid bleeding from her tongue and scalp,” said Marnie-Rae’s mom, Cath, The Sun reported. "She is sick four or five times a day, vomiting blood."
Marnie-Rae’s problems all began back in July, when she suddenly woke up one morning with blood coming out of one of her eyes.
"It feels like we're living in a horror movie. At first it was only her eye. She woke up in a pool of blood,” Cath explained. "She came downstairs with the blood pouring from her eye. We rushed her to A&E but they could do nothing for her."
The strange bleeding soon moved from Marnie-Rae’s eye to her ears, scalp, fingernails, and beneath her tongue.
"The strangest thing is her eye can be pouring blood until her face is covered and then suddenly it stops and the whites of her eyes are clear," Cath said.
Though doctors have been unable to pinpoint a diagnosis, they have ruled out blood disease, clotting disorders, and a brain tumor.
An ultrasound also showed that Marnie-Rae’s liver, kidneys, womb, ovaries, and other organs are all functioning properly, as well as her eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
While the bleeding does seem to get worse around Marnie-Rae’s period, doctors still haven’t been able to connect the dots.
"It's weird, scary, really scary. I woke up the first time in a pool of blood. I walked downstairs and my eye was bleeding and the whole side of my face was covered in blood. My family were so shocked,” Marnie-Rae said.
Because the mystery illness has left Marnie-Rae completely housebound, she has already lost many of her closest friends.
"I've lost most of my friends, they don't want to see me. I'm always at home. My life is on hold, I can't go to college,” the devastated teen revealed. "My eyes are the most shocking thing. I wish the doctors would just find what it is. No one has ever seen anything like it before."
