Perhaps one of the more exciting parts of planning a wedding is picking our your bridesmaids and groomsmen. Typically, these special people are friends or even family members that you’ve known and cherished for quite sometime. They play a major role in the ceremony, and will stand beside you as you say your wedding vows, so you definitely want the bridal party to include people you trust, and people you want to celebrate with!
One groom chose a bit of an unconventional best man for his big day, but once the photos and his story started being shared around the internet, people couldn’t get enough!
KC Schafer always knew that he wanted his grandfather to stand beside him at the altar when he decided to get married. The two have an unbreakable bond, and KC’s grandfather truly is the “best man” in his life.
When KC’s parents got divorced, he went to live with his grandfather, Charles Shafer. KC says that Charles is like a father to him, and his now-wife Sarah admits that she was extremely nervous to meet the elderly man, because she knew how important his and KC’s relationship is.
Despite being 90 years old, Sarah says that he has no health issues that she knows of, and that he is “very sweet, very outgoing and very mobile”. The loving grandfather even helps the couple out with yard work and has fixed their sink! Sarah has become extremely close to Charles as well, since she lost both of her grandparents, she says that Charles is “basically a grandfather to me.”
Even before an engagement was on the table for discussion, KC had mentioned multiple times that he wanted Charles to be his best man. Initially, Sarah thought he was joking.
“Before we even talked about getting engaged, he told me he wanted his grandpa to be his best man. I just thought ‘Oh, he’s kidding.’’’ she recalled.
But, sure enough, once the couple got engaged, KC went over to his grandfather’s house and asked him to be his best man. Sarah thought the whole thing was “precious”.
On the big day, 90-year-old Charles stood beside his grandson in a matching bright blue best a bowtie. He performed all of the traditional best man duties, including posing for pictures, taking care of the rings, and entering the reception with the maid of honor on his arm.
KC and Sarah were wed on April 15th, the same day Charles married KC’s grandmother Shirley, who passed away in 2015. The couple was married for 65 years.
It’s heartwarming to see a grandson not only make good on his word to have his grandfather be his best man, but to include someone so special to him on his big day in such a major way. It is clear that Charles is an extremely important part of this couple’s life, and it’s so special that they all got to share this unforgettable day together.
