After yoga instructor Jhula attended the Burning Man music festival in 2015, she became inspired. While there, she saw other attendees practicing yoga – while drinking beer.
Upon returning home, Jhula decided to try it for herself. It was easy to see why people thought this was a good idea.
Both beer and yoga are “centuries-old therapies for body, mind, and soul.” Jhula wrote on her official class site, “The joy of drinking beer and the mindfulness of yoga compliment [sic] each other, and make for an energizing experience.”
Jhula pioneered her idea back home in Germany and named it “Bieryoga.” Initially, she only offered to conduct classes in German.
When popularity and demand increased, Jhula introduced English-led classes – that many tourists and visitors are now taking when they visit Berlin.
Bieryoga offers classes not just at studios, but also at bars, festivals, birthday parties, and even outside surrounded by nature.
Anyone who is curious – and over 16 years old – can take the class to try it for themselves. During each session, which costs between $5 and $7, you’ll receive an hour of yoga instruction and two beers, that you’ll drink during that time.
Bieryoga has since expanded from being based in Germany to traveling and offering classes in Australia. They unfortunately, don’t currently have plans to travel elsewhere, but if you’re in Salem, Oregon, you can take yoga classes in a brewery – and enjoy your beer after you’re done.
Would you try this class?
