Yesenia Sesmas, 34, admitted that she killed her friend, Laura Abarca-Nogueda, but it had been an accident.
Nine months ago, Sesmas began lying to her family about being pregnant. After suffering from a tragic miscarriage, Sesmas was desperate for a child, but didn’t want to face the prospect of losing another baby.
That was when Sesmas approached the pregnant Abarca-Nogueda for help. The two women agreed that after Abarca-Nogueda gave birth to her daughter, the child would be given to Sesmas, so the woman could pretend it was hers.
After Abarca-Nogueda’s daughter, Sophia, was born, however, the woman decided that she no longer wanted to part with her child.
Sesmas was furious and went to threaten Abarca-Nogueda, in hopes of convincing her friend to hold to their agreement. Sesmas had brought a gun with her, but never intended to use it. The weapon had only been there to add weight to her threat.
It “discharged accidentally,” but Sesmas took cue by taking Sophia and running.
The local police in Wichita, Kansas, caught wind of this ploy when Sophia’s family reported her to be missing when she was just six days old.
Since then, police have caught Sesmas and arrested her for first-degree murder and kidnapping. The FBI, agents, and other investigators are still looking into this case.
Sophia was found in Sesmas’ care, in the family’s home with Sesmas’ boyfriend, who police don’t think was at all involved in these plans. The baby has been returned to the care of her own family.
