Dove chocolate is common around this time of year, especially for their festive, winter-themed chocolates.
Unfortunately, chocolate snowflakes may be a cause of strife for those with peanut allergies.
Dove, owned by Mars Chocolate North America, produced some of their batches of Dove chocolate snowflakes on equipment that may also have contained Snickers, Milky Way, and Twix particles.
These candies contain nuts. For millions of consumers out there, this means that their chocolate snowflakes could be dangerous.
It could also affect customers with milk or wheat allergies.
Dove has voluntarily recalled these chocolate snowflakes, and has pulled about 6,700 packages form the shelves.
This isn’t uncommon. Unknown allergen recalls are among the most common types of food recalls, with 43 out of 94 total recalls in 2014 being allergy related.
Mars Chocolate is just being safe. They said that no “adverse reactions” have been reported. However, they’re encouraging consumers to throw out any of the product nonetheless.
The company is in the process of removing them from all store shelves, and telling customers with peanut, wheat, or milk allergies to return their product for a refund, if possible.
The company only became aware of the potential peanut contamination when a customer told them that they found a Snickers in their bag of Dove Chocolate Assortment Snowflakes.
If you think you have one of the bags, and you have a peanut allergy, the company has issued a warning for all bags sold between September 19th and December 1st.
