If you’re trying to improve your eating habits but you just can’t seem to figure out where to start, there are some easy things to do to both make your diet healthier AND make it cost less.
Crazy, right? It sounds like it shouldn’t be possible, but it is.
Here are just a few ways:
- Stop buying from the junk aisles. A lot of people’s excuse for buying junk food is that it’s cheaper. Cheaper than what? Oftentimes, buying fresh produce, pastas, even canned versions of healthy foods is less expensive than going out for fast food, buying 12-packs of sodas, Oreos, Doritos, and junk food you can munch on. It’s a myth that eating healthier is expensive, and the prices just back it up.
- Don’t think that everything you buy has to be organic. In fact, this couldn’t be less true. A simple google search can tell you which produce is best to buy organic, and which ones you don’t really need to bother with. But the main guideline is this: If it has a thick skin, you probably don’t need to buy it organic.
- Don’t be afraid to freeze. If you know you won’t be able to enjoy your fresh fruits before they go bad, try cutting them into pieces and freezing them. Then you can either use them in a smoothie, or thaw them out to cook with dinner, or just eat them on their own.
- Shop smart. Start couponing, join your supermarket’s loyalty program, anything you need to get discounts. Then, try only buying produce that’s in season, or things that are on sale. Buy frozen fruits and veggies if you need to. Also, you’ve heard it before and it’s true: don’t go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
