When you’re riding the train, you mostly have to trust that others will mind their own business.
Because sometimes, they feel like your business is their business.
Kara Florish, 30, was given a card while she was on the train. Not by an aspiring businessman, but by someone only interested in harassing others.
She posted a picture of the card to Facebook, saying:
“Dear all – I was handed this card this morning on the underground and I would appreciate it if people tweeted, posted etc all over the internet.
“I am not upset myself. I am smaller than the national average and not exactly obese, but this is hateful and cowardly and could potentially upset people struggling with confidence and eating disorders.
“Please tweet and share this if you are also outraged. Plus – to the person who wrote this card, go back to school, you can’t spell ‘beautiful.’”
The front of the card proclaims it’s from Overweight Haters Ltd, and includes an inflammatory message about overweight people.
The back of the card just says the word “FAT.”
When asked by the Daily Mail about what the man who approached her looked like, she said, “The man was middle-aged, and a normal-looking white man. He didn’t say anything, just put the card on my lap and got off the train.”
There doesn’t appear to be a website for this supposed company, but the post has gone viral.
One man wrote: “If I see one of these guys on the tube, I’ll ensure they end up obese themselves after swallowing their own cards.”
Another person said, “What sort of person would do this?”
Florish works for the NHS (in a twist of fate), and is a choral director in her spare time. She said, “I’ve never been skinny but don’t consider myself fat, but that’s not the point of this. Even if I was, people should not be using someone’s size to bully others.
