There has been a lot in the news about turmeric. Like all superfoods, there have been claims that it can cure just about anything. But with all of the buzz around it, you may be wondering: what really is turmeric, and what can it really do?
So what is turmeric, anyway? According to Web MD, it’s a spice that’s been in medicinal use in India for thousands of years. Its main active ingredient is curcumin, and that’s what everyone’s been getting excited about.
For traditional use, there’s strong evidence that the curcumin found in turmeric is great for inflammatory issues, such as joint pain from arthritis or symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. In my opinion, that’s already enough of a reason to get some of it when you need to. But recent studies have suggested that curcumin may improve cardiovascular function, treat mood and memory disorders, or even prevent cancer.
Wow! If that were true, that would be quite the superfood. But is it?
Like all studies, most of the findings related to turmeric aren’t totally conclusive. The National Institute of Health’s statement on turmeric maintains that there is “little reliable evidence” of turmeric’s magical healing properties, especially the newer findings.
Does that mean turmeric is a total waste of money? Not at all. If you experience joint pain, inflammation, or want something to aid your recovery from sickness or a difficult workout, turmeric is a great assistant. But like most superfoods, it should be seen as a nutritious food, not a miracle cure.
