Fall In Love With THIS Full-Body Workout All Over Again

There are so many different ways to get a full-body workout nowadays, but one of the best ones is a machine that seems to have fallen out of grace. Read more to see how this machine can really be the full-body workout you need.

Let me start with a disclaimer: I love the elliptical machine. I have recurring Achilles’ tendinitis from my days as an irresponsible high school athlete, some early onset arthritis from my days as an irresponsible high school competitive dancer, and a drive for cardiovascular health. With that kind of combination, the elliptical is a true godsend.

But I know that my opinion isn’t a popular one, so I feel like it’s about time someone stood up for the elliptical. Here are my favorite things about the elliptical, and some info on how to make it work for you.

Why use the elliptical?

It’s a challenge for any fitness level. Whether you want to just get started at the gym, you’re trying to get back in the fitness game, or you’re a marathon runner who just wants a lower impact workout, there’s always a way to get a workout that will challenge you on the elliptical.

You can make it a full-body workout. With an engaged core, the use of the handles, and increased resistance, you can get a total body workout in just one machine. 30 minutes of good form and challenging speed and intensity can get you a full workout on just one machine.

It’s great for bouncing back. Whenever I had recovered from a flare-up of my tendinitis, I always started back with the elliptical before going back to running. Research shows you can regain range of motion in your hips with the help of the elliptical, and it’s used for recovery workouts for those who have torn their ACL. And if you have joint problems like I do, the low-impact movement is great on those sore areas and helps you get a great workout without aggravating those joints.

It puts you in control of your workout. With an easy-to-use console and tons of options for built-in workouts, you can get as hard or as easy a workout as you need on any given day. It can be its own workout or a short addition to a longer workout. And studies have shown that with proper use, your heart rate can get just as high from an elliptical workout as it can on a treadmill. With an elliptical, your workout is up to you.

Okay, I’m sold. Now what?

Once you’re on the machine, make sure you have proper form. Keep your back straight, engage your core, and don’t lean on the handles. Then, make a plan that varies in speed and intensity (interval workouts work especially well). Make a fun playlist and put it on shuffle so you don’t know what’s coming. Then, get to work! Your perfect full body workout is at your fingertips.
