Beauty has always been defined differently depending on where you are or what year it is, but the latest trends are so entirely specific that many feel they are lacking.
Great example: thigh gaps.
A thigh gap, as you probably already know, is a tiny space between your inner thighs, meaning that your thighs do not touch when you are standing up. This is one of many "beauty standards" that women feel they need to live up to. Is it really possible, though?
After all, since it emerged on the internet in 2013, people have feverishly been trying workouts and even plastic surgery to obtain the gap. Some even believe that it has made eating disorders more prevalent. It's gotten so serious that Instagram and Tumblr have made the hashtag "#thighgap" unavailable in order to stop young women from obsessing about it on social media.
For some, yes, it's absolutely possible to have the thigh gap. For others, it's simply not possible due to genetics and bone structure. If your hips are naturally wide and you also have a naturally high metabolism, thigh gaps are not only possible but probably unavoidable. If, however, your hips are naturally smaller and you have a slower metabolism--oh, and let's just say that you're also pear-shaped--then you really don't stand a chance.
This isn't to say that thigh gaps are ugly or beautiful--the gap is just one more way to differentiate between two separate bodies. If you have one, that's amazing! If you don't or can't obtain one, don't worry and strut your stuff!
Still don't believe us? Watch this "thigh gap" parody--it'll help you see just how ridiculous it really is.
