When it comes to letting our little ones express themselves, usually picking out their own outfit for the day is as far as we’ll go. Things like makeup, hair colors, and the like are fun to be sure, but a bit much for younger kids. However, that doesn’t stop our munchkins from asking if they can put on some blue eyeshadow or dye their hair any color of the rainbow, does it?

Rachel Ann Carpenter’s daughter really wanted to dye her hair pink. Since Rachel’s daughter Nevaeh was rather young, the protective mom said no to the idea. However, a year later, she changed her mind. No matter how strict you are when it comes to hair dye, you might side with the mom on this one after you hear her story.

While away at summer camp, a demonstration with fire went terribly wrong, and Nevaeh ended up getting badly burned. "They were doing a demonstration and it went horribly wrong and caught her on fire. When they first called us, no one would tell us over the phone how bad it was. I got ahold of her father and we both left work and headed for the hospital." she told POPSUGAR.

After waiting more than 7 hours to see their daughter, Rachel and her husband finally got to see their daughter. What they saw left them horrified. Nevaeh had suffered third-degree burns on over 70 percent of her body. The young girl was in the hospital for 3 months and had to undergo 7 skin grafts.

Though the process was excruciating, Nevaeh was finally able to go home with her family. She was also feeling well enough to ask her mom for something she still desperately wanted.

Even after the accident, Nevaeh was passionate about dying her hair pink. So, she asked her mom again. This time, Rachel decided to think about it before saying no right away.

After seeing her little girl go through so much pain, she now had a new outlook on granting her requests.

"I can't even put into words some of the things we saw her go through while we were in the hospital. It's the worst feeling to see a child in pain and feel so hopeless. We wished we could just take it all away for her and have it be ourselves." she said.

Waiting in the hospital, not knowing if her daughter was going to live or die, made her realize how important every moment with her daughter was. She wanted to see Nevaeh happy, so this time, she said yes.

"So this time when she asked me if she could have pink hair, I said yes. That experience taught me you never know how much time you have left, with anyone.”
