He Grew Up Fat-Shaming Others. Then He Gains 100 Pounds.

After gaining over 100 pounds himself, one Reddit user finally realizes how wrong it was for him to fat-shame people when he was younger. This is his story.

A Reddit user, known by the username roundrobinator, recently took to the weight loss subreddit (called LoseIt) to apologize for a lifetime of his shameful behavior.

“I am the one who was giving you dirty looks in the grocery store. … I am the one telling you it is your fault. That you're disgusting and you're just lazy,” he wrote in the opening of his post.

But then, two years ago, he was rushed to the emergency room. An accident had happened at work and caused him to completely rupture his left Achilles’ tendon. He would, thankfully, be on paid leave, but he would have to spend all his time in bed, off his feet, to let his injury heal.

At first, roundrobinator was thrilled to have the opportunity to be lazy. He loved lazing around and eating as he wished, and didn’t even care that the doctors told him he’d gained 30 pounds since the injury. But roundrobinator didn’t think much about it; he just assumed it was injury weight that would be shed as soon as he was able to get up again.

By the time the man was ready to finally transition back to work, seven months after the injury (He spent an extra month on paid leave because he ended up needing surgery.), he weighed over 218 pounds and was soon unable to even button his larger shirts.

That was when roundrobinator decided that he needed to lose weight. He tried to go running, but realized his body wasn’t going to support that level of activity. He tried any diet that seemed like it would work, and low-intensity exercises – but it was still a struggle.

During one of his power walking workouts in the neighborhood, a man in a truck passed by, opened the window, and made pig snorting noises at him.

Roundrobinator had never felt so low in his life.

A week later, he finally, finally followed his doctor’s advice and went to visit a dietician.

He weighed 289 pounds and now, he wrote, “I was sick, I was nasty, I was the disgusting one. I know you fight. I know you're not weak, you're the opposite, you're the strongest kind of person out there. … I apologize to each and every one of you who has ever been unfortunate enough to cross paths with a volatile prick like me who sought to make your personal private health concerns their business.”

Strangers on Reddit have been offering him their support and advice, and we, too, wish him our best in his newfound struggle and journey.
