On Tuesday, 13 high school students at Naperville North High School in Illinois were sent to the hospital.

All of them had gone to see the nurse, reporting that they were feeling dizzy and had dry mouths. Their heart rates were also abnormally fast.

After waiting for some time, but failing to see any improvement in these students, school officials decided to send them all to the hospital.

For other students at school, it was “scary” to see their friends be transported off school grounds by stretchers and ambulances.

After some investigation, police suspect that all of these students had consumed gummy bears between classes. Though they are still investigating into the details more closely, police suspect that these particular bears had been laced with a “liquid-based marijuana substance.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, two of the 13 students had been released from the hospital. The other 11 remained in for treatment.

Students across the school knew about the incident as it unfolded, thanks to social media and texting, and many have been interviewed by the police.

At present, police are still not sure if the hospitalized students realized what they were eating, or if the distributor of the candies knew what they had been giving out.

The school is responding to the incident by paying closer attention to passing periods between classes – which was when these gummy bears were passed out in the first place – in hopes of keeping another similar incident from happening.
