Juan Pedro Franco, a 32-year-old man from Aguascalientes, Mexico, hasn’t left his bed for six years. He now weighs 1,100 pounds and is currently unsure if he will ever be able to walk again.
When Franco was born, he only weighed 2.4 kilograms (5.29 pounds).
But ever since then, he’s gained about 10 kilograms – 22 pounds – each year.
By the age of six, Franco weighed 60 kilograms (132 pounds), and by the time he was 17, he was 200 kilograms (440 pounds).
Around this time, Franco also got into an accident. The incident didn’t leave him immobile, but it discouraged him from moving – which is when he started gaining weight at an even faster rate.
His parents note that it was also during this time that Franco became depressed and stopped going to his full-time job at a shop.
The lack of movement and change in activity prompted Franco to gain weight until he was 1,100 pounds.
His parents, for the first time in six years, are trying to see if anything can be done for their son.
They contacted a special hospital ambulance and arranged for the vehicle to pick Franco up from their house and send him to a hospital to see a doctor. They’re desperate to know if their son will ever be able to walk again.
The entire trip was incredibly taxing. Franco had to be supported with oxygen tanks and EMS staff during the move and several people had to be by his side, helping him move his giant body.
Doctors are currently running tests to see if Franco will ever be able to lose enough weight and regain enough muscle to walk independently again.
It will be several months yet until Franco will be able to make any progress on his mobility.
