During 27-year-old Aimee Fagan’s third and final pregnancy, she experienced an incredibly touching moment with her unborn daughter during a routine ultrasound scan.
On her first two pregnancies, Fagan and her husband had already done 4D ultrasounds, so they knew generally what to expect from the screening.
This time, however, their unborn daughter gave the sonographer a hard time. “…the baby was hiding at first and wouldn’t let us have a look at her,” Fagan explained.
It was only when Mollie, Fagan’s younger daughter, began talking to her mother’s baby bump – her unborn sister – that the baby began to move.
Everyone in the room was stunned to see the that the baby had a huge smile on her face.
“We wondered if it was because of Mollie and the lady said ‘stop talking for a minute’, then the baby stopped smiling,” Fagan recalled. “As soon as Mollie started speaking again she was just smiling away as if she recognized her.”
Particularly because Fagan knew this would be her last pregnancy, it was “amazing to see.”
Everyone previously thought that babies only learned to smile from imitating their parents after birth. However, doctors are now speculating that babies still in the womb already have the ability to display facial expressions.
Now, after this tender moment at the ultrasound, both Fagan parents are even more excited for the birth of their child.
“I hope she’s going to be a smiley baby. My other girls are very happy children, which is nice, and they’re excited about having a sister,” Fagan said.
Then she added, “Hopefully her smiling at Mollie means they’ll get along well – until the fighting starts!”
