A Two-Year-Old Girl Chokes To Death On A Piece Of Popcorn. Now Her Family Is Warning Other Parents

Mirranda Grace Lawson was only two years old when she choked on a piece of popcorn. The kernel had gotten lodged in her air passage, and tragically, there was nothing anyone could do to save her.

Two-year-old Mirranda Grace Lawson passed away on November 1, 2016, after suffering severe brain damage from choking on a piece of popcorn.

Several months ago, Mirranda’s parents had decided to feed their young daughter some popcorn, not knowing that she could still choke on it.

They only realized when Mirranda rushed into the living room for her parents’ help. Her eyes were bulging and she wasn’t able to breathe because a piece of popcorn had gotten stuck in her throat. Her airway was completely blocked.

Mirranda’s father, Patrick, began to perform CPR as the family waited for an ambulance to arrive.

But by the time the paramedics came, Mirranda’s heart had already stopped beating.

The doctors refused to give up and managed to resuscitate Mirranda – only to report that she’d endured serious, irreparable brain damage. The young girl was put on life support for two months, but showed no signs of improvement.

At that point, doctors wanted to run a brain death test on Mirranda, to re-assess her condition, but the Lawsons refused to let this happen and made to press charges against the hospital for doing so.

“She's not acting like someone who is brain dead,” Patrick insisted.

As the Lawson family battled the doctors, however, Mirranda’s condition slipped and her kidneys failed.

She passed away on November 1, before any of the lawsuits had been settled. You can support the family through this difficult time by donating to their GoFundMe page.

The Lawson family is now making the effort to warn other parents against feeding their young children harmful foods. Consult a childcare professional to ensure that you are introducing the right amounts of solid food to your child at the appropriate time.
