Fifteen-year-old Karinya Chen began fighting bone cancer five years ago.
Her journey was filled with many ups and downs, and though she knew “the biggest thing is to not worry and fear,” Chen admitted that sometimes, it was hard to follow her own advice because “it’s a difficult thing every single day…just to get past every single day.
“You just have to remember that there's always tomorrow and…you take it one day at a time and just tell yourself don't worry,” she finished.
In spite of her fears, Chen did her best to listen to hold to her words: She and her family had even bought tickets for her to attend a Florence and the Machine concert in May 2016.
As the date neared, however, Chen’s health took a turn for the worse. Her doctors told her she wasn’t well enough to go.
But the hospital staff didn’t stop at that. Employees at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, where Chen was being treated, reached out to Florence and asked if she could give the teen her own personal concert.
Florence didn’t hesitate in the slightest.
She and her guitarist took a day off from their touring schedule to pay Chen a personal visit at the hospital.
The two, Chen and Florence, sang four duets together, all of which Chen’s mother later uploaded to YouTube.
The footage is absolutely incredible, and not just because of Florence took the time to visit Chen.
Chen’s voice is stunning. She harmonizes on the spot with Florence, and even the singer can’t contain her excitement at certain moments, “That was incredible!”
Tragically, Chen passed away, peacefully in her sleep, just five days after Florence’s visit.
Her family is incredibly grateful for everything the hospital staff, doctors, and Florence have done for their daughter.
