In Alvin, Texas, one junior high choir teacher had entered hospice care after her health declined. Mariana Walker was slowly losing her battle to cancer.

When Walker’s students at Alvin Junior High School learned this information, however, they knew they wanted to do more for their beloved teacher than just sending cards or flowers.

That was how they decided to show up to Walker’s home last Thursday to sing her one last song. It would be a gift she could keep with her, knowing that her students had learned to use their voices so well and so beautifully.

About twenty students gathered at Walker’s home and sang her “Oceans” by Hillsong.

When Walker’s daughter heard about the students’ plan, she opened all the windows and doors in the house so her mother could better hear her students sing.

“We had the windows open. We had the screen door open and she could hear that. I think that gave her a lot of peace,” said Walker’s daughter, Alyx Vesey.

The students’ timing could have been better or more bittersweet.

Just minutes after they finished singing, as Walker’s family was shutting the doors and windows once more, Walker took her last breath.
