Alexandra Nicole Laird is a 21-year-old woman from Pleasant Grove, Alabama, currently being kept in jail for charges of child endangerment.

Laird is a heroin addict currently around 18-20 weeks pregnant with her second child. She has not, however, stopped using heroin – and this isn’t the first time this has happened.

Earlier this year, Laird gave birth to her first child, a daughter who was born addicted to heroin and had to be kept in the hospital to receive withdrawal treatment.

At the time, Laird lost custody of her daughter, was charged with child endangerment, but remained free on bond. During her court case, she revealed that she used heroin once or twice a week for approximately five months of her pregnancy.

Now, during her second pregnancy, she admits that she’s using it almost two to three times a week.

The police have obtained an official warrant on Laird and are keeping her in jail until her child is born. They believe this is the only way they can protect the unborn child from further harm.

Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid. told reporters, "I'm doing my damndest to try to prevent any further damage to this child, since it's obvious the mother doesn't seem to care.

"But make no mistake, sad or not, law enforcement will hold this mother accountable and vigorously defend and protect the well-being of the child, who is innocent of all of this and simply struggling for life."
