If you’re a fan of carrot cake, but don’t fancy grating pounds and pounds of carrots to make carrot cake at home, try taking this ketchup cake for a spin.
The recipe for ketchup cake has apparently been around for a few years, (since 2009, when Heinz celebrated its 100th birthday in Canada) but Reddit user, Greg Nuttle, only noticed the recipe advertised on the back of his Canadian Heinz ketchup bottle last week.
The company advertised their cake recipe as “Great Canadian Ketchup Cake” on the backs of their ketchup bottles and linked interested customers to the recipe online.
Nuttle was curious about how the cake actually tasted, so he decided to take the recipe for a spin and invited three friends over to taste test when he was finished.
Each of his friends, in succession, admitted the cake was “pretty good.” The ketchup taste wasn’t, as feared, “very prominent.” The cake was moist and reminded one of Nuttle’s friends of carrot cake, but with a “finer crumb.”
After watching his friends sample a few bites, Nuttle caved. He’s vegan, the cake contained eggs and butter, but he’d spent too much effort slaving over his cake to not try it.
Nuttle considered the bite for a moment, then had to admit, the cake was “pretty good.”
