A mother in Spain recently gave birth to twins, the first of whom arrived as expected.

The birth of the second child, however, was incredibly unique. This sort of birth only happens once every 80,000 births, and doctors have called it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to witness for themselves.

The second twin was born still completely wrapped in the mother’s amniotic sac, the clear membrane that surrounds and protects the fetus within the mother’s womb.

Usually, the amniotic sac is broken during the birthing process, releasing the fluids that prompt women to say their water has broken.

This child, however, was born curled up inside the amniotic sac, his umbilical cord wrapped within the sac alongside him.

The doctors and nurses who were present at the birth all gathered around to see this medical phenomenon for themselves before they proceeded to break the amniotic sac and help the child out before letting him meet his mother and sibling.
