Newly-weds, Sarah and Chris Corthorn had just tied the knot and were enjoying their honeymoon in the Maldives when things began to go horribly wrong.

The Corthorns were on a boating adventure when Mrs. Corthorn suddenly began to have trouble breathing and staying afloat in the water. Others on the boat immediately threw Mrs. Corthorn a buoyancy aid and pulled her back on board.

Mr. Corthorn recalled, “When they got her out of the water and back into the boat she was unconscious. I really thought Sarah was a goner.”

Thankfully, one of the other tourists on board was a certified nurse who could perform CPR and other first aid on Mrs. Corthorn before the boat crew quickly transported to the nearest hospital on land.

The trouble didn’t end there.

The doctors at the first hospital were unable to fully help Mrs. Corthorn, so she had to be airlifted to a second hospital in India to receive proper care.

It was there that Mrs. Corthorn was diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid. The condition had caused her heartbeat to double as she was swimming, which then led to heart failure.

Mrs. Corthorn’s leisurely snorkel could very easily have caused her death, doctors told them after.

Thankfully, Mrs. Corthorn is said to be recovering well, despite the long road of recovery ahead of her – that includes potentially having her thyroid removed.
