Family is a WONDERFUL thing… When we are lucky enough to be part of bringing a new life into the world, it is one of the BEST feelings ever.
We also know we have to let others go, and that is a very difficult thing to do. But sometimes, we get to live in a window of time where young meets old and THOSE are the moments we cherish the most.
Brandy Gregware of Alabama is living in that exact window now.
Ten months ago she prematurely gave birth to twin boys, Kash and Kolbie. Little Kolbie was born with a heart defect, pulmonary vein stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, chronic lung disease, kidney disease, and Down Syndrome. He has spent most of his life in the hospital, and has even been put on life support for over 2 weeks because of a simple cold.
But Kolbie is a fighter and he’s got the BEST family on his side. Brandy is a stay at home mom, not only taking care of the boys, but also her own father.
Kash and Kolbie’s grandfather is no stranger to the hospital either; he’s had 2 open heart surgeries, 18 stents (a tube used for arteries), a pacemaker, a deflator, arty disease, stroke, multiple mini heart attacks, is diabetic, AND only has 10% heart function.
Kolbie had HIS first open heart surgery at just 4 months old, and you can bet that his grandfather was there to support him through it all. Brandy talks about their extraordinary relationship and how her dad will “hold Kolbie for hours and they chat about their matching zippers,” which is how THIS amazing picture came to be.
Knowing that this precious window of time is short, Brandy contacted a photographer to capture this moment. This picture shows their unbreakable bond.
Through the past year, both grandfather and grandson have been in and out of the hospital, but this grandfather would often refuse to be admitted until he knew little Kolbie was safe at home.
Brandy’s dad is currently on medication “that helps his heart beat a little stronger,” but they know that once the medicine is no longer effective, they will have to let him go.
Brandy is taking this bittersweet story as “proof of 2 amazing fighting miracles!!”
