Mabel Jackson, from Suffolk, England, recently turned 100 and feels as young and energetic as she’s ever been. Her secret?
Drinking gin and tonic, every single day.
More correctly, drinking six gin and tonics, every single day.
“I have two at lunchtime, one at tea time with a biscuit, and then three more during the evening while I do my knitting,” Mabel explains. “I swear the gin keeps me young!”
Her 74-year-old daughter agrees, “[Mabel] loves a tipple, and to be honest, it seems to have preserved her, like a good pickle.”
Mabel has kept this habit up for the past 82 years, and calculated once that she’s drank 4,264 bottles since starting this practice. “I worked it out one night when I couldn’t get to sleep. Instead of counting sheep, I counted gins.”
Clearly Mabel is doing something right. Not only has she just turned 100, but she was also married for 55 years to her childhood sweetheart, had three children, nine grandchildren, and even three great-grandchildren.
How does Mabel keep up with all of this?
Gin and tonic.
“It’s lovely to see the young ones,” she said, “but they are quite boisterous and once they’ve gone I definitely need a gin and tonic.”
