South Korea claims to have developed an ice cream bar that actually cures hangovers after a rough night of drinking.
As Asia’s hardest drinking country, South Korea is constantly searching for the next big hangover cure.
The $125 million a year industry includes anything from pills and cosmetics to soups and stomach-calming foods.
But nothing sounds quite as delicious as this grapefruit flavored hangover ice cream bar that’s currently being sold through a popular South Korean convenience store chain.
According to Reuters, the new Gyeondyo-bar’s secret comes from the small amount of oriental raisin tree fruit juice inside the ice cream.
Raisin juice has actually been considered a viable remedy for hangovers since the 1600s, when it was first listed as a hangover cure in a medical book.
Since then, many scientists have studied the effects of raisin juice on uncomfortable hangovers, and several of them have been pleased by the remarkable results.
A study from 2012 in The Journal of Neuroscience even found that raisin tree extract reduced the effects of extreme intoxication in rats.
According to a press release from the convenience store chain Withme FS, Gyeondyo literally translates to “hang in there,” which “expresses the hardships of employees who have to suffer a working day after heavy drinking, as well as to provide comfort to those who have to come to work early after frequent nights of drinking.”
While this is all excellent news for South Koreans, the rest of us will have to make do with our own hangover cures for the time being.
