Throwing away food at home is a big no-no when you’re trying to get by on a tight budget; plus nobody actually likes being wasteful.

There are plenty of ways to repurpose pretty much any type of food, especially overripe fruits and vegetables.

Take bananas, for example. When a bunch of bananas have become too ripe and mushy to eat, try making banana bread!

The possibilities are endless, but we’re still always surprised to discover a new way to repurpose things in the kitchen.

That’s why we absolutely love this gardening hack for growing delicious tomatoes by The Wannabe Homesteader.

In the incredible video below, you can learn how to grow sweet juicy tomatoes with nothing more than a pot, soil, and an overripe tomato.

No need to run out and buy seeds—just check your kitchen for unused tomatoes!

Instructions:

  1. Fill about half the pot with fresh soil or garden mix.
  2. Slice a tomato into quarter-inch pieces, making sure each slice contains seeds.
  3. Lay each slice down on top of the soil.
  4. Pour just enough soil on top of the tomato slices to fully cover them, but don’t go too overboard.

Now just water your growing plant every once in a while, and that’s virtually all you have to do to grow your own tomatoes at home!
