Keeping healthy fruits and vegetables around the house can be tough when you’re on a pretty tight budget.

The only problem with fresh produce is how quickly it goes bad—sometimes before you even get a chance to eat it.

And don’t even get me started on how expensive organic vegetables are getting!

Luckily, there’s an easy solution to eating the best organic produce at just a fraction of the cost; plus it’ll cut down on your trips to the store.

Just regrow your produce! It doesn’t work for all vegetables, but there are plenty that can actually be regrown with nothing but water.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You’ll need to use a container that works for the veggie (i.e. a shallow bowl for lettuce or a tall glass for green onion.)
  • The water needs to be checked every few days.
  • Always make sure to clean up rogue pieces, so they don’t gunk up your container.

Don't Waste the Crumbs

With that said, here are 5 foods that can be regrown in water alone:

  1. Celery: You probably already cut the bottom couple of inches off when you prep celery stalk anyway. Now instead of throwing that seemingly useless nub away, just stick it in a bowl of water. It will start growing on its own within 3-4 days, but you’ll need to wait longer if you want a full stalk.
  2. Green Onion: Don’t waste the end of a green onion! Take that white part, and any roots that are still intact, and stick it in a long glass with some water. You’ll have tons of green onion in no time.
  3. Lettuce: Just like with celery, you probably always cut the bottom every time you buy a new head of lettuce. Simply take that chunk and stick it in a shallow bowl of water. You’ll start to see a little growth near the center in about 3 days.
  4. Leeks: Before throwing any scraps away, cut about 2-3 inches off the bottom of your stalk and let it sit in a cup of water for a few days. Growth will start to show around the center first.
  5. Bok Choy: After slicing the bottom of the stalk and placing it in a small bowl of water, your Bok choy will start growing almost immediately. Within one week, you should start to notice significant growth.
