Pay it forward, one slice at a time!
In a city known for its mouthwatering cuisine (especially its pizza!) one in five New Yorkers go hungry every day.
However, the people at Sal and Carmine Pizza are fighting to put an end to hunger in their beloved city and what better way to do that than with slices of iconic New York style pizza!
This NYC pizzeria has teamed up with Change Matters, a nonprofit who works with companies to help them raise money for good causes.
At Sal and Carmine Pizza, Change Matters has helped them to develop a “buy one give one” program to help feed the hungry.
Customers who come in can donate $3 to buy a slice of pizza for someone in need. They then write on a Post-it note and put it up on the Change Matters board.
You come in, you can buy a slice,” said Betsy Imershein, founder of Change Matters. “You don’t have to buy a slice, you can donate. Pizza here is $3 a slice. You can donate any multiple of $3, and you can write on a Post-it note and put it up on the board.”
People in need can then come in and take a Post-It off of the board and redeem it for a delicious slice of pizza, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
“It doesn’t matter who, you know. If they need it, they must need it,” said Luciano Gaudiusa, owner of Sal and Carmine Pizza.
It’s a simple, but brilliant system that has lasting results. Most customers seem to be able to spare $3 to relieve someone of hunger. From the looks of the Change Matters board, there are always plenty of Post-It notes for people to use, so they’ll never go hungry.
Is pizza the answer to ending world hunger? Maybe not, but it’s a great start!
