Separating conjoined twins is always a gamble, especially depending on the place they’re conjoined.
These twins, just three months old when they were separated, were conjoined t the liver. They’ve been successfully separated.
They were born conjoined at the abdomen and lower chest. It’s referred to as omphalopagus. Together, they were only 9.2 pounds.
After they were separated, they were transferred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research for specialist treatment.
The surgeon who operated on them, Dr. Ravi Kanojia, said, “This is a rare case scenario and a surgeon would be fortunate to see a couple of cases in his or her lifetime.”
Luckily for the twins, only their liver was shared.
Usually, conjoined twins aren’t separated until they’re over a year old. But these twins were only 9.2 pounds together, and doctors worried that any delay could cause stunted growth.
The twins’ father is a laborer in Indai named Mohammad Saleem, and he makes about $8 per day. He could not afford basic treatment for his daughters. But he and his wife are grateful for the dedication of the staff.
“The doctors at PGI were my last hope and nobody could have attended the twins better than the doctors in the hospital.”
Their mother, Sonia, said, “We have been worried about our children for the last three months but God answered our prayers.”
The twins are doing well, and only one of them is expected to need surgery in the coming months. They are said to be healthy enough that they will be sent home today.
