  1. Don’t change your workout routine. Keep yourself just as active as you would be if it wasn’t the holiday season. Try squeezing it in first thing in the morning, to kick your day off right. 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day can keep the pounds and the stress away.
  2. Skip the drinks. Though it’s the season for eggnog and mulled wine, those sugared calories can add up fast. Steer clear of the mixed drinks and stick to straight alcohols and red wines that aren’t too sweet.
  3. Start your day with protein. A protein-powered breakfast can really kick your day off right, and can keep you fuller for longer. You may feel like you’re eating more before you load up at the holiday party, but filling up before will actually make you want to eat less later.
  4. Eat throughout the day. It sounds like counterintuitive advice, but eating every few hours can help your metabolism stay active. Have snacks with complex carbs and protein (veggies and hummus, for example) so you can stay full and don’t overeat.
  5. Don’t take the leftovers. We’ve all been on both sides of this—both as the person who has too many leftovers and the person who feels obligated to take some home. No matter how good the food was—don’t take them. It’s just more fattening food you’re bringing home with you.
  6. Stand up and walk around. Don’t get stuck on a couch at a holiday party. Keep taking steps and walking around. Even a lap around the living room can make a difference.
