General Mills is voluntarily recalling 1.8 million boxes of gluten-free Cheerios after discovering that they may contain wheat.
In a press release issued on Monday, the company said that issues offloading flour in its facility in Lodi, California, may have caused serious wheat contamination.
According to General Mills, the flour contamination affects four days’ worth of the factory’s production of Cheerios labelled “gluten free.”
This recall is seriously concerning to anybody suffering from a wheat allergy, which is why the company is urging customers to call 1-800-775-8370 for help.
General Mills has since ordered any boxes still in its warehouses and on store shelves to be returned immediately.
Since the contaminated boxes of Cheerios hit shelves, the company has already had a few complaints from customers with wheat allergies.
"[T]here have been reports of illness by consumers online. Two complaints of illness have been reported directly to General Mills related to the affected products," said company spokesperson Kirsite Foster.
According to CNN, General Mills is currently in the process of converting five of its classic Cheerio varieties to gluten free.
This particular recall affects both Honey Nut Cheerios and classic Cheerios. Customers can check the “best if used by” codes on their cereal boxes to find out if theirs is one of the affected boxes listed here.
