Selfies are an innovation that only this century could produce. Some research says that they help your self-esteem, some say it hurts it, but one thing is for sure, it can actually hurt you.
And now, they could even kill you.
Now, despite a high rate of shark attacks this year, the rate of death by selfie is even higher.
This year, there have been 8 deaths by shark attack. There have been 12 selfie deaths.
Of course, the stories of death-by-selfie are just wild. Because the things that people do while taking selfies, or the moments they’re trying to capture, are just incredible.
According to Android Authority, one Japanese tourist tripped down the stairs while trying to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal Royal Gate, leading to serious head injuries that killed him.

An unluckier man died trying to get a selfie during a bull running.
There have been 12 selfie deaths, but even more major and minor injuries. The problem is so bad that theme parks, conventions, and even governments are taking notice.
Disney theme parks have banned selfie sticks. Comic-Con has banned them too. They’re banned out of safety to those attending.
In Russia, there’s even a new public service campaign telling the public to avoid taking selfies in risky areas, like rooftops, near trains, or around dangerous animals. This isn’t an unnecessary warning, there have been dozens of selfie-related injuries to warrant it.
Selfies are harmless fun—in the right setting. Always be aware of your surroundings when taking a selfie, and use common sense. Take them in a safe space.
