Researchers at University of Alberta in Canada have found a new way to get your heart pumping, and there's no gym membership required!
According to new research, the health benefits in resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, are equivalent to those that we get from exercise.
Jason Dyck, the lead researcher in the study, believes that these findings will benefit those that are unable to exercise as resveratrol was seen to improve physical performance, heart function, and muscle strength.
"I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable," he says. "Resveratrol could mimic exercise for them or improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do."
The benefits of red wine have been well researched and well documented.
Previous research as found that those who drink red wine regularly are less likely to develop dementia or cancer, that it's good for your heart, anti-ageing and can regulate blood sugar. Now there is also research that shows it boosts your heart rate.
Not too long ago, one researchers was fiddling with thousands of different compounds and found that one affected brown fat cells the same way that exercise did. If resveratrol could offer those similar benefits in a glass of wine, there won't be any reasons not to have that glass of wine after work!
If red wine isn't your thing, you can still get a good dose of resveratrol from blueberries, peanut butter, red grapes, and dark chocolate--so mix it up! Moderation and a balanced diet are key to staying healthy.
