With all the things the holidays bring, there are definitely a few things we can all do without--particularly the colds, allergies, stresses, deadlines, and for some, seasonal depression. But how do we strengthen our bodies against all the stresses? The best way is through your diet.

Something noteworthy about these foods that help reduce stress: some of these foods are rich in healthy fats that will keep you fuller, longer. Also, a lot of them are packed with nutrients that will strengthen your immune system; which is perfect as we make our way into the cold and flu season!

Check out five foods that combat stress levels, anxiety, and even depression.

1. Asparagus. Recent studies suggest that depression and anxiety levels are linked to low levels of folic acid, and there is no better food source for this mood-enhancing nutrient than asparagus. Just one cup of asparagus has two-thirds of your daily value for the day, and it is easily paired with any protein source! Try coating it in olive oil and grilling it alongside some marinated chicken.

2. Avocados. Avocados are a rich source of vitamin B, E, A, and potassium, all of which help to lower stress levels. Vitamin B has been shown to elevate moods while potassium has been shown to help lower blood pressure--powerful tools in the fight against stress! If you're looking for something a little more comforting than guacamole (although chips and guac are never a bad idea), try making some homemade avocado ice cream with avocados, nut milk, bananas, vanilla extract, and agave nectar. Blend, freeze, and enjoy!

3. Blueberries. "When we’re stressed, our bodies need vitamin C and antioxidants to help repair and protect cells," Tanya Zuckerbrot of Men's Fitness explains. Vitamin C has been shown to be helpful in combating stress, and repairs the damage that stress can wreck on your body. They're also packed with vitamin B! If you're looking for something nutritious and sweet, opt for Odwalla's Blueberry B smoothie--it's only 260 calories and filled to the brim with vitamins and nutrients!

4. Oranges. Like blueberries, oranges are packed with vitamin C, but with the added benefit of being totally portable! They're also perfect munch on as a snack--because they're so juicy, they will help you to stay fuller, longer; which can be amazing when you're fighting sugar cravings. Just be sure to eat oranges instead of simply drinking the juice--simply having the juice without the added fiber of the fruit will cause a spike in your blood sugar, which will have you crashing in no time.

5. Salmon. Fish has actually been shown to be extremely beneficial for those suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. That's because a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids helps keep cortisol and adrenaline from spiking when you're feeling tense. Try eating salmon for lunch or dinner three times a week to get the full benefits!
